The parent company owns the subsidiary companies Happold Consulting, Happold Media and Happold Safe and Secure. The firm includes a number of specialist engineering consultancy groups.

Buro Happold werd gestart in 1976 in Bath, in het zuidwesten van Engeland, door Edmund Happold, toen hij de positie van professor Architecteur en Bouwkunde aan de universiteit Bath aanvaardde en zijn baan als ingenieur bij Arup verliet.
