- The Burgos Cathedral is a Gothic-style cathedral in Burgos, Spain. It is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and is famous for its vast size and unique architecture. Its construction began in 1221, following French Gothic parameters. It had very important modifications in the 15th and 16th centuries . The last works of importance (the sacristy or the Chapel of Saint Thecla) occurred during the 18th century, the century in which the Gothic statuary of the doors of the principal façade was also transformed. At the beginning of the 20th century, some semidetached construction to the cathedral was eliminated, such as the Archepiscopal Palace and the upper floor of the cloister. The style of the cathedral is Gothic, although it has some Renaissance and Baroque works. In the cathedral, works of extraordinary artists are kept, such as the architects and sculptors of the Colonia family, the sculptors Gil de Siloé, Felipe Vigarny or Juan de Anchieta, the sculptor and architect Diego de Siloé, the grillworker Cristóbal de Andino or the painter Sebastiano del Piombo ("Holy Family On A Voyage"), among many others. The cathedral was declared a "World Heritage Site" by UNESCO on October 31 of 1984. It is the only Spanish cathedral that has this distinction independiently, without being joined to the historic center of a city or in union with others buildings, as in Seville. The principal façade was inspired in the purest French Gothic style of the cathedrals of Paris and of Reims. It consists of three bays topped by two lateral, square towers. The steep spires of German influence were added in the 15th century and are work of Juan de Colonia. Some elements of great interest of within of the cathedral are the Papamoscas (Flycatcher), articulated statue which opens its mouth upon the sounding of the bells at each hour, the Romanesque sepulchre of Mudarra, the vengeful stepbrother of the death of the seven princes de Lara (brought to the cathedral from its original location in the Monastery of San Pedro de Arlanza due to its abandonment by alienation), the carved chairs of the choir, the sepulchre of the Bishop Mauricio, the tomb of El Cid and his wife Doña Jimena, the letter of security of El Cid and his chest.

Tuvo importantísimas modificaciones en los siglos XV y XVI: las agujas de la fachada principal, la Capilla del Condestable y el cimborrio del crucero, elementos del gótico avanzado que dotan al templo de su perfil inconfundible. Las últimas obras de importancia (la Sacristía o la Capilla de Santa Tecla) pertenecen ya al siglo XVIII, siglo en el que también se retiraron las portadas góticas de la fachada principal. El estilo de la catedral es el gótico, aunque posee, en su interior, varios elementos renacentistas y barrocos. La construcción y las remodelaciones se realizaron con piedra caliza extraída de las canteras del cercano pueblo burgalés Hontoria de la Cantera. En la catedral se conservan obras de artistas extraordinarios, como los arquitectos y escultores de la familia Colonia, el arquitecto Juan de Vallejo, los escultores Gil de Siloé, Felipe Bigarny, Rodrigo de la Haya, Martín de la Haya, Juan de Ancheta y Juan Pascual de Mena, el escultor y arquitecto Diego de Siloé, el rejero Cristóbal de Andino, el vidriero Arnao de Flandes o los pintores Alonso de Sedano, Mateo Cerezo, Sebastiano del Piombo o Juan Ricci, entre otros muchos. El diseño de la fachada principal está relacionada con el más puro estilo gótico francés de las grandes catedrales de París y Reims, mientras que el alzado interior toma como referencia a la Catedral de Bourges. Consta de tres cuerpos rematados por dos torres laterales de planta cuadrada. Las agujas caladas de influencia germánica se añadieron en el siglo XV y son obra de Juan de Colonia. En el exterior son sobresalientes también las portadas del Sarmental y la Coronería, góticas del siglo XIII, y la portada de la Pellejería, con influencias renacentistas-platerescas del siglo XVI. Numerosos son los tesoros arquitectónicos, escultóricos y pictóricos de su interior. Destacan: El grandioso cimborrio gótico-plateresco, alzado primero por Juan de Colonia en el siglo XV y reconstruido por Juan de Vallejo en el XVI. La Capilla del Condestable, maravilla del gótico isabelino, en la que trabajaron la familia Colonia, Diego de Siloé y Felipe Bigarny. El minucioso retablo gótico hispano-flamenco de Gil de Siloé para la Capilla de Santa Ana. La sillería del coro, obra renacentista plateresca de Bigarny. Los relieves tardogóticos de la girola, de Bigarny. Los numerosos sepulcros góticos y renacentistas. La renacentista Escalera Dorada, de Diego de Siloé. El Santísimo Cristo de Burgos, imagen de gran tradición devocional. La significación histórica envuelve la tumba del Cid y su esposa Doña Jimena, su carta de arras y su cofre. El popular Papamoscas, estatua articulada que abre la boca al dar las campanadas de las horas, reclamo habitual de los visitantes. La catedral burgalesa fue declarada Monumento Nacional el 8 de abril de 1885 y Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco el 31 de octubre de 1984. Es la única catedral española que tiene esta distinción de la Unesco de forma independiente, sin estar unida al centro histórico de una ciudad o en compañía de otros edificios, como en Sevilla.
