La première référence historique est un acte de donation du domaine en 1157, de Frédéric Barberousse à Rudolf zu Eltz. Depuis cette époque, le château a subi de nombreuses modifications, mais il n'a jamais été détruit et reste la propriété de la même famille, pendant 33 générations. Dès le Moyen Âge, trois héritiers se sont partagé le domaine. Chaque lignée a ensuite procédé à de nouvelles constructions, ce qui explique le foisonnement actuel de tourelles et de logis.
