Die Behörde, deren Aufgabe (in Zusammenarbeit mit den Landeskartellbehörden) der Schutz des Wettbewerbes ist, verfügt über einen Haushalt von 17 Millionen Euro (Stand 2005) und 320 Mitarbeiter, von denen knapp die Hälfte Juristen oder Ökonomen sind. Das Bundeskartellamt nahm seine Arbeit im Januar 1958 auf. Bisherige Präsidenten waren Eberhard Günther, Wolfgang Kartte, Dieter Wolf und Ulf Böge. Traditionell werden Ministerialbeamte aus dem Bundeswirtschaftsministerium an die Spitze des Bundeskartellamts berufen.
