Kanbutsu-e seremonia eli Buddhan syntymäpäivä tuotiin Japaniin Intiasta Kiinan kautta ja sitä juhlistettiin Japanissa ensimmäistä kertaa Narassa vuonna 606. Juhlapäivänä ei vain juoda makeaa teetä, vaan sumi-mustetta jauhetaan siihen ja syntyneellä musteella kirjoitetaan paperilapulle "Huhtikuun 8. on hyvän onnen päivä ja hyönteiset on ajettu pois. " Paperilappu ripustetaan sen jälkeen ylösalaisin ja sen uskotaan kartoittavan epämieluisat hyönteiset. Hana matsuri tunnetaan myös nimillä Bussho-e sekä Goutan-e.
