- The British and Irish Lions, formerly known as the British Isles and the British Lions, is a rugby union team made up of players from England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. The Lions generally select international players; they can pick uncapped players available to one of the four Home Unions, but in recent years this has rarely occurred. Combined rugby union sides from the then United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland toured in the Southern Hemisphere from 1888 onwards. The first tour took place as a commercial venture, made without official backing, but the six subsequent visits that took place before the 1910 South Africa tour, the first representative of the four Home Unions, enjoyed a growing degree of support from the authorities. Great Britain also entered a team at the Olympics Games in 1900 and in 1908, but they were organized separately from the Lions. In 1949 the Four Home Unions combined formally to create a Tours Committee and for the first time, every player of the 1950 Lions squad was an international before the New Zealand series. The 1950s proved a golden age for Lions rugby, although only in the 1970s did style begin to match the substance of victory in New Zealand and South Africa. Originally, poorly organised Lions teams regularly suffered defeat at the hands of their hosts, but by 1955 the tourists took the matches seriously enough to obtain a 2-2 draw in South Africa. The 1970s saw a renaissance for the side. The last tour of the amateur age took place in 1993.

Auch Spieler, die noch nicht für ihr Land gespielt haben, aber für eine der vier Home Nations qualifiziert sind, dürfen ausgewählt werden (was jedoch selten vorkommt). Gemeinsame Teams des damaligen Vereinigten Königreichs Großbritannien und Irland unternahmen seit 1888 Touren in die südliche Hemisphäre. Die erste Fahrt war ein rein kommerzielles Unternehmen ohne offiziellen Rückhalt, doch die sechs folgenden Touren vor der Südafrika-Tour 1910 erhielten zunehmende Unterstützung, obwohl nur ein Kader Spieler aller vier Nationen beinhaltete. Seit 1910 wählt ein Gremium mit Vertretern aller Home Nations die beteiligten Spieler aus. Anfangs unterlagen die schlecht organisierten Lions-Teams gewöhnlich ihren Gastgebern, doch mit dem Beginn der 1950er Jahre begann eine Art goldenes Zeitalter, als sie die Serie in Südafrika mit einem respektablen 2-2 abschlossen. Die 1970er Jahre waren das erfolgreichste Jahrzehnt mit dem bisher einzigen Sieg über die neuseeländischen „All Blacks“ und einem 3-0 über die südafrikanischen „Springboks“. La primera de ésta tuvo lugar en Australia y Nueva Zelanda en 1888. Las giras se desarrollan cada 4 años desde 1989. Ellas tienen lugar generalmente en las tres naciones principales del hemisferio meridional en cuanto a rugby, es decir, Sudáfrica, Australia y Nueva Zelanda; ocasionalmente enfrentan a la Argentina. C'est une équipe de tournée. La première de celle-ci a eu lieu en Australie et en Nouvelle-Zélande en 1888. Les tournées se déroulent tous les quatre ans depuis 1989. Elles ont lieu chez les trois nations majeures de l'hémisphère sud, à savoir l'Afrique du Sud, l'Australie et la Nouvelle-Zélande. Jouer pour les Lions est un très grand honneur, plus grand même que jouer pour son équipe nationale. De même, pour leurs adversaires : leurs pays ne peuvent désormais rencontrer les Lions que tous les 12 ans. Comme les Lions sont spécifiquement conçus pour les tournées dans l'hémisphère sud, les quelques matches qu'ils ont joués contre d'autres équipes ne comptent pas comme des capes à part entière pour les Britanniques. Le nom officiel de l'équipe est alors British Isles XV. Le XV de France a rencontré les Lions une seule fois en 1989 pour une défaite 27-29 à Paris au parc des Princes. De même, les Barbarians n'ont rencontré les Lions qu'en 1977 à Twickenham à Londres pour une défaite 14-23. L'Argentine a également joué contres les Lions.

Queste nazioni vengono riferite nel mondo del rugby come le ‘’Home Nations’’ e talvolta ci si riferisce ai ‘’Lions’’ come il team delle ‘’Home Nations’’. È possibile che vengano convocati anche giocatori senza presenze precedenti nella loro nazionale, anche se è successo molto raramente. La prima selezione unificata proveniente dal Regno Unito risale al 1888 e come d’uso rimasto sino ad ora nacque per un tour nell’emisfero australe. Infatti la selezione nacque e sopravvive ancora oggi, nell’era del rugby professionistico, come squadra per i tour oltremare, in particolare in Sud Africa, Nuova Zelanda ed Australia e, prima del match con l’Argentina del 2005, non aveva mai dipustato un match ufficiale contro una nazionale diversa dalle tre citate e per di più in casa. La prima selezione fu creata come iniziativa commerciale (non si era ancora creata la scissione tra sostenitori del dilettantismo e i ‘’professionisti’’ del futuro rugby league). Prima del 1910 le selezioni ebbero dunque un carattere ufficioso e una sola volta compresero giocatori di tutte e 4 le ‘’unions’’, anzi nel 1908, la selezione si chiamò ‘’Anglo-Welsh’’, mancando i giocatori scozzesi ed irlandesi. Va detto che, sino ad una ventina d’anni fa, le singole nazionali delle Home Unions non si recavano solitamente in tour nei paesi australi, lasciando a queste rappresentative unificate il compito di sfidare le forti nazionali australi. L’era d’oro dei Lions inizia però negli anni ’50, anche se il mito nasce negli anni ’70 con le vittorie in Nuova Zelanda e Australia. Nel 1955, dopo anni di selezioni improvvisate e quindi deboli, la rappresentativa ottenne un ottimo risultato con un pareggio (2 vittorie e due sconfitte) contro il Sud Africa. L’ultimo tour dell’era dilettantesca risale al 1993. Attualmente i Lions vanno in tour ogni 4 anni alternando Nuova Zelanda, Sud Africa ed Australia. Sono dunque pochissimi i giocatori che hanno affrontato i Lions due volte in anni diversi, dovendo attendere 12 anni prima di ricevere una nuova “visita”.
