  • Die British Association oder - in der Langform - die British Association for the Advancement of Science ist eine Gelehrtengesellschaft mit dem Ziel, Wissenschaft populär zu machen und den Austausch zwischen Wissenschaftlern zu fördern. Sie wurde 1831 nach dem Vorbild der Gesellschaft deutscher Naturforscher durch William Vernon Harcourt auf Vorschlag von David Brewster gegründet, nachdem dieser sich enttäuscht von der aus seiner Sicht elitären und konservativen Haltung der Royal Society abwandte. Die erste Zusammenkunft der Gesellschaft fand am 27. September 1831 in York statt. Während der letzten Jahrzehnte war es das Hauptziel dieser Gesellschaft, das Verständnis von Wissenschaft in der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu fördern. Das jährliche Treffen, welches heute "Festival of Science" (Fest der Wissenschaft) genannt wird, ist die größte öffentliche Wissenschaftsveranstaltung in Großbritannien, die viel öffentliche Aufmerksamkeit auf sich zieht. Die Jugendorganisation der Gesellschaft (British Association of Young Scientists) hat es sich zum Ziel gesetzt, Schüler über die Schullehrpläne hinaus mit Wissenschaft zu konfrontieren und sie zu ermutigen, sich in diesem Gebiet weiterzubilden.

Cette association à but non lucratif a pour but de promouvoir l'ouverture à la science dans la société et d'encourager l'engagement de tous dans les sciences et la technologie. Elle organise chaque année un festival de la science à travers tout le Royaume-Uni et une semaine de la science. La BA a notamment abrité un vigoureux débat le 30 juin 1860, à propos de la théorie de l'évolution, entre le représentant de Charles Darwin, Thomas Henry Huxley et l'évêque d'Oxford, Samuel Wilberforce qui refusait de « descendre du singe ». La BA, à l'époque appelé encore BAAS, est également à l'origine du système CGS proposé en 1874.
