The British New Wave is the name given to a trend in filmmaking among directors in Britain in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The label is a translation of Nouvelle Vague, the French term first applied to the films of François Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard and others. There is considerable overlap with the so-called "Angry Young Men", those artistes in British theatre and film such as playwright John Osborne and director Tony Richardson, who challenged the social status quo.

Thema der Filme ist vor allem das Leben der Arbeiterklasse in Nordengland. Die Filme sind meist in schwarz-weiß gedreht und bemühen sich um einen fast dokumentarischen Realismus, den man auch Kitchen sink realism nannte. Die Autoren und Filmemacher gaben zum ersten Mal in der britischen Kulturgeschichte den kleinen Leuten eine Stimme und erzählten alltägliche Dramen. Die Ära dauerte bis ungefähr 1964/1965, als leichte Komödien und Actionfilme wie die James Bond-Filme das britische Kino zu beherrschen begannen.
