- The Bridgewater Canal connects Runcorn, Manchester and Leigh, in North West England. It was opened in 1761 from Worsley to Manchester, and later extended from Manchester to Runcorn, and then from Worsley to Leigh. The canal is connected to the Manchester Ship Canal via a lock at Cornbrook, the Rochdale Canal in Manchester, the Trent and Mersey Canal at Preston Brook, southeast of Runcorn, and to the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Leigh. It once connected with the River Mersey at Runcorn but has since been cut off by a slip road to the Silver Jubilee Bridge. Often considered to be the first "true" canal, it required the construction of an aqueduct to cross the River Irwell, one of the first of its kind. Its success helped inspire a period of intense canal building, known as "canal mania". It later faced intense competition from the Liverpool and Manchester Railway and the Macclesfield Canal. Navigable throughout its history, it is one of the few canals in Britain not to have been nationalised, and remains privately owned. Pleasure craft now use the canal which forms part of the Cheshire Ring network of canals.

Le canal est relié à plusieurs rivières, la Barton Swing et l'Irwell grâce à deux vieux aqueducs de pierre. Selon Maurice Rubichon, « les travaux ont exigé plus de papier-monnaie que n'en a ce chétif établissement appelé Banque de France, encore n'a-t-il jamais vu comme elle son papier discrédité. » Selon Fernand Braudel, le canal a permis d'approvisionner Manchester avec du charbon deux fois moins cher qu'auparavant et au duc de réaliser un bénéfice de 20 % de sa mise. Le duc s'est lancé ensuite dans d'autres entreprises fluviales moins rentables qui l'ont lourdement endetté, les bénéfices n'arrivant qu'à la fin de sa vie. À sa mort, en 1803, il a légué ses parts dans le canal et la mine à une fondation de trois personnes. Les travaux de l'historien anglais Tony Stuart Willan ont montré l'importance de la navigation fluviale aux Modèle:S2- en Grande-Bretagne, et sa grande complémentarité avec le cabotage puis avec la circulation marchande sur les canaux à partir de la seconde partie du Modèle:S-.
