Diese Begriffsverwendung von Bricolage geht auf den Ethnologen Claude Lévi-Strauss zurück, der 1962 sein Konzept des „Wilden Denkens“ („nehmen und verknüpfen, was da ist“) vorstellte und diesen Begriff so in die Sozialwissenschaften einführte. Für ihn ist Bricolage die nicht vordefinierte Reorganisation von unmittelbar zur Verfügung stehenden Zeichen bzw. Ereignissen zu neuen Strukturen.
