  • Brian Massumi is a philosopher, writer and political theorist. His work focuses on perception, affect and the virtual. Massumi's research spans the fields of art, architecture, political theory, cultural studies and philosophy. He teaches in the Communication Department of the Université de Montréal. Massumi is also known for English-language translations of recent French philosophy, including Jean-François Lyotard's The Postmodern Condition, Jacques Attali's ' and Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus. Massumi collaborates with Erin Manning, director of the Sense Lab, a research-creation laboratory affiliated with the Society for Art and Technology. They also co-edit a book series at MIT Press entitled Technologies of Lived Abstraction and are founding members of the editorial collective of the Sense Lab journal Inflexions: A Journal of Research-Creation. Massumi is currently teaching at Université de Montréal, in the Communication Sciences Department. He received his Ph. D in Philosophy from Yale University in 1987.

Il a exploré ses thèmes dans les domaines de l'art contemporain, de l'architecture, de la théorie politique (autour du concept de peur dans la politique américaine contemporaine), des Cultural studies et dans la philosophie en général. Dans le monde anglo-saxon, Massumi est connu pour ses traductions en anglais de philosophes contemporains tels Jean-François Lyotard (La condition postmoderne, avec la collaboration de Geoffrey Bennington), Jacques Attali (Bruits) et surtout Gilles Deleuze et Félix Guattari. Les travaux de Massumi sont d'ailleurs très influencés par la pensée de ces deux derniers auteurs dont il articule l'apport à l'« empirisme radical » de William James. Massumi collabore avec la photographe Erin Manning qui dirige le Sense Lab, un laboratoire de recherche-création affilié à la Society for Art and Technology. Ils co-éditent une série d'ouvrages aux MIT Press ayant pour titre « Technologies of Lived Abstraction » où contribuent les membres fondateurs du Sense Lab journal. En France, Massumi contribue régulièrement à des collectifs sur Deleuze et Guattari, notamment dans la revue Multitudes.
