  • Brian Desmond Hurst (12 February 1895 – 26 September 1986) was an Irish-born British film director. Hurst was born in 1895 in Castlereagh, now part of Greater Belfast, into a working class family. His father was an iron-worker in the shipyards. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914 he enlisted in the British Army. He saw service in Gallipoli, the Balkans and the Middle East. Returning from WWI, with service medals for the Crown, Hurst nevertheless harboured nationalist sympathies at this stage, but he found life in Belfast constraining and he took a government grant to emigrate to Canada sometime in 1920. He wanted to follow his artistic ambition and enrolled at the Toronto College of Art. After two years he left and went to France to study art at École des Beaux Arts in Paris. He is best-known for his work on The Tell-Tale Heart (1934), The Lion Has Wings (1939), Dangerous Moonlight (1941), Scrooge (1951), Playboy of the Western World (1972) and Malta Story (1953).
