Beginnend mit ihrem Folgealbum entwickelten sie jedoch einen völlig eigenständigen Sound, der mit „The Fat Of The Land“ seinen Höhepunkt erreichen sollte. Bereits in den frühen 1990ern spaltete sich die Hardcore-Szene in zwei verschiedene Richtungen: Der fröhliche, vom niederländischen Hardcore Techno inspirierte Happy Hardcore auf der einen Seite und die weiterhin Breakbeat-lastigen Stile Jungle sowie Drum'n'Bass auf der anderen Seite. Während Happy Hardcore zur Zeit der Jahrtausendwende die Bezeichnung UK Hardcore bekam, entledigte sich Drum'n'Bass im Laufe der Jahre sowohl musikalisch als auch namentlich seiner Hardcore-Wurzeln. Gewisse Elemente des Breakbeat Hardcore finden sich auch in neueren Breakbeatstilen wie Hardcore Breaks, Big Beat oder Nu Breaks wieder. Der Begriff „Hardcore“ wird häufig auch als Abkürzung für Hardcore Techno verwendet.
