- Boys for Pele ist das dritte Album von Tori Amos. Es erschien 1996 als Nachfolgealbum von Under the Pink bei Atlantic Records (innerhalb USA) und WEA International (außerhalb USA). Mit Pele ist die hawaiische Vulkan-Göttin gemeint. Tori Amos legt ein Album vor, auf dem sie neben dem obligatorischen Bösendorfer-Flügel auch Cembalo (Blood Roses, Professional Widow, Caught A Lite Sneeze, Talula), Harmonium (Hey Jupiter, Muhammad My Friend) sowie Clavichord (Little Amsterdam) spielt. Das Album handelt von dem Feuer, das sie diversen Männern in ihrem Leben stahl und dem Weg, ihre eigene Leidenschaft zu entfachen. Es ist als kontinuierliche Geschichte angelegt, die novellenartig eine Entwicklung anzeigt. Es geht dabei um überwältigende Begierden und Bedürfnisse sowie Liebe. Das Erkennen der eigenen Bedürfnisse spielt für Tori Amos eine wichtige Rolle für die Frauwerdung. Aus ihrer Sicht kann die Jungfrau Maria keinesfalls ein Vorbild für eine Frau sein. Die erste Single-Auskopplung Caught a Lite Sneeze wurde zeitgleich kostenlos im Internet veröffentlicht und war das erste Experiment dieser Art. Trotzdem fand diese Single wenig Beachtung. Das Album lief Anfangs ebenfalls mäßig und machte in den USA zunächst weniger durch ihre Musik, als durch ein Bild, auf dem sie einem Ferkel die Brust gibt, auf sich aufmerksam. In Leihbüchereien wurde dieses Bild aus dem Beiheft entfernt und ein Mann verklagte sogar die Plattenfirma (das Bild soll einen Autounfall verursacht haben!). Der Professional Widow Techno Remix von Armand van Helden wurde ein weltweiter Hit und erreicht Nr.1-Platzierungen in diversen Dance-Charts. Plötzlich stieg das Interesse an dem Album wieder an, und Atlantic Records brachte nun diverse Variationen von Boys for Pele heraus. So gab es Versionen mit dem Professional Widow (remix) bzw. dem In the Springtime of His Voodoo (Remix). Außerdem wurde das Original Talula mit Talula (The Tornado Mix) getauscht. Schließlich war aber wieder die ursprüngliche Version erhältlich und Boys for Pele konnte in den USA doch noch eine Platin-Auszeichnung erringen. Nachdem sich Tori Amos vom langjährigen Partner Eric Rosse (Co-Produzent von Little Earthquakes und Under the Pink) getrennt hatte, trat sie von da an als alleinige Produzentin ihrer Alben in Erscheinung. Die neue Freiheit kostete sie sogleich aus, um dieses Pop-inkompatible Album herauszubringen. In der Gunst der eingefleischten Tori Amos Fans steht dieses Album oft ganz oben und kann nicht als einfacher Einstieg in die Welt von Tori Amos gelten. Zum ersten Mal ist hier auch ihr zukünftiger Ehemann Mark Hawley vertreten, der seit Boys for Pele ihr ständiger Tontechniker ist.

Despite the album being Amos’ least accessible material to radio to date, Boys for Pele debuted at # 2 on both the Billboard 200 and the UK Top 40, making it her biggest simultaneous transatlantic debut, her first Billboard top 10 debut, and the highest-charting US debut of her career to date. Boys for Pele was recorded in rural Ireland and Louisiana and features 18 songs that incorporate harpsichord, clavichord, harmonium, gospel choirs, brass bands and full orchestras. Amos wrote all of the tracks, and for the first time, she served as the producer for her own album. For Amos, the album was a step into a different direction, in terms of singing, songwriting, and recording, and is experimental in comparison to her previous work.
