The school was founded in 1956 as a junior and senior high school to serve the town of Bowness . In 1964 the town was annexed by Calgary. No longer having a junior high component, the school now serves several Calgary communities in addition to Bowness.

No longer having a junior high component, the school now serves several Calgary communities in addition to Bowness. Some of the programs of the school include the PAS Program, the Flash Fiction Contest, and Digital Movie Making. As well the school has a special partnership with Imperial Oil, which helps in certain areas, such as science. The school's Trojan's football team made national headlines in 2004 when a player named Tyler Zeer, died during practice. At the time, it was only the third such fatality in the 92 year history of the Calgary Senior High School Athletic Association. The 1986 BMX movie Rad was filmed here.
