Jahrhundert wurden sie durch das Vordringen von Somali vom Clan der Darod weitgehend wieder bis westlich des Tana abgedrängt. Die britischen Kolonialherren stoppten schließlich das weitere Vordringen der Somali auf Kosten der Borana in Kenia. Sprache der Borana ist das Borana, das zu den südlichen Dialekten der Oromo-Sprache gehört und auch von den Gabbra und Sakuye gesprochen wird. Sie sind traditionell Rinderzüchter, wobei heute manche auch Schafe, Ziegen oder gar Kamele halten oder Ackerbau betreiben. Ihre traditionelle Religion ist monotheistisch mit einem Gott Waka; in den letzten 70 Jahren hat der Islam unter ihnen an Einfluss gewonnen, einige wenige Borana sind Christen. König der Borana ist seit 2009 der Viehlandwirt Guyyoo Gobbaa.

A causa della tradizione musulmana (un tempo tutti i Borana avevano aderito a questa religione, in seguito rinnegata da alcuni clan) usano ancora costruire le loro case con la porta rivolta verso la Mecca. Gli animisti credono in un unico dio chiaramente derivato dalla figura di Allah, chiamato Waka. Ci sono due categorie di sciamani: i kalu e gli abagada. I kalu (figli di Dio) sono guaritori; i loro poteri sono ereditati dal primogenito e i loro capelli non vengono mai tagliati. Gli abagada sono sciamani di rango inferiore, che hanno il compito di accudire e aiutare i kalu.
