- Bodog is a brand which licenses the right to use its name on online gambling websites, and does not operate any of the sites itself. The original “Bodog” was founded in 1994 by Calvin Ayre as an online gambling company. Later it diversified by adding a mixed-martial arts production and a music label, though it shut down those projects in 2008. In 2008 Ayre changed Bodog's business model by ceasing to operate the gambling websites directly, and instead licensed the right to run those sites under the Bodog brand name to various licensees. Calvin Ayre, Bodog’s original founder, describes the BodogBrand. com licensing model as “not unlike the Virgin-branded venture capital organization founded by Richard Branson”. BodogBrand. com main licensee is Morris Mohawk Gaming Group, which runs Bodog. com to offer online gambling services within the United States. Morris Mohawk’s CEO is Alwyn Morris, a recipient of the Order of Canada. In a May 2009 interview, Morris describes the brand licensee relationship with Bodog as "a kind of franchise". Morris Mohawk is based in Kahnawake, a native reserve in Quebec, Canada, pursuant to its online gaming license granted by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. In addition to the MMMG, a second licensee, Bodog Europe, operates Bodog. co. uk for European players and Bodog. ca for Canadian players, and a third licensee, Haydock Sports, runs Bodog88. com to serve players in Asia. The companies stated that Haydock is headquartered in Manila, is run by the former Managing Director Asia for Victor Chandler, and operates pursuant to its own remote gaming license granted by First Cagayan in the Philippines.
