The main concept is to allow anybody create and update the information of any route, just like Wikipedia does for its pages. It is a hybrid combination of Google Maps and Wikipedia. Users can also embed images with description in each point of interest when they draw their walks. The service provides an embed functionality to insert the created map onto any webpage or blog.

This project started off in 2008 by a group of student from Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. So far, bluewalks has won various awards which includes Seedrocket 2009 and Start Innovation & Sustainability 2008. The project is created with a goal to rediscover the city through the eye of city travellers and to encourage people to share their unique perspective of their own city. On 13 August 2009, bluewalks announced that they submitted an iphone application to the App Store On 8 September 2009, bluewalks released its iphone application bluewalks mobile on the App Store.
