BDS skal ha fått navnet sitt fordi initiativtakerne tenkte at blå diamanter er sjeldne - like sjeldne som homofile og lesbiske i Nepal. Men organisasjonen viste seg å vokse raskt og få stor oppmerksomhet. Hjemmesida til BDS nevner ei lang rekke seksuelle minoriteter som organisasjonen forsvarer, bl.a. : «Meta (transer), Dohori, Ta, Homser, Biseksuelle, lesbiske, Hijra, Singaru, Fulumulu, Kothi, Kotha, Strian, Maugia, Panth og mange flere. » Nepal er et tradisjonelt, religiøst hinduistisk samfunn, der undertrykkelsen av lesbiske og homofile er sterk. BDS har lagt vekt på en offentlig profil med bl.a. homoparader og fester, protestbevegelser mot politiangrep og fengslinger av homofile osv. Reaksjonære krefter svarte i juli 2004 med å prøve få organisasjonen forbudt. I tillegg til å arbeide mot trakassering og for rettigheter for homofile og lesbiske, arbeider BDS bl.a. for homofiles helse og mot hiv/aids, og med forskjellige sosiale tiltak.
