- Blue-Eyed Soul ist eine in den USA geprägte Bezeichnung für die Soulmusik oder an Soul angelehnte Musik weißer Künstler. Erstmal wurde die Bezeichnung Mitte der 1960er Jahre verwendet, als Formationen wie die Righteous Brothers mit soulartigen Titeln Erfolge landeten. Weitere Blue-Eyed-Soul-Künstler dieser Zeit waren beispielsweise Chris Farlowe, Ferris Wheel und Wayne Fontana. Eine der bekanntesten Blue-Eyed Soul-Interpretinnen ist Dusty Springfield, die „White Queen of Soul“ genannt wurde. 2003 machte die weiße Soulsängerin Joss Stone auf sich aufmerksam. Sie feierte mit ihrem Album „The Soul Sessions“ große Erfolge.

A finales de los ´80 la prensa británica empezó a utilizarlo también para referirse a una generación de artistas británicos que aunaban elementos de los estilos clásicos Motown y Stax del Soul. Sin embargo el "white soul" como se le llamaba en los ´60 y principios de los ´70 se aplicaba a cantantes blancos cuyo estilo estaba muy influenciado por el rhythm and blues de la época. Se aplicaba a artistas como Eric Burdon, Dusty Springfield y Van Morrison al principio para evolucionar más tarde a través de otros como The Box Tops y Joe Cocker. En algunos casos los artistas pasaban por miembros de raza negra en la radio (muchas veces de forma deliberada para no perder a la audiencia de raza negra que rechazaba, a menudo, a estos artistas). D'altra parte non si tratta di un stile specifico di musica, dato che questo termine è stato utilizzato, a partire dagli anni sessanta, per riferirsi a differenti artisti e gruppi musicali, quali: cantanti bianchi, del genere Rhythm and blues, come Tom Jones, Teena Marie, Jonathan Buck, Michael McDonald, Hall & Oates, Mariah Carey, Amy Winehouse, Duffy e Joss Stone; una generazione di artisti inglesi, a cui si riferì la stampa britannica verso la fine degli anni ottanta, tra i quali Alison Moyet, Simply Red, Human League, Rick Astley, Spandau Ballet e Culture Club, che avevano elementi comuni alle case discografiche Motown e Stax, specializzate nei settori soul e rhythm and blues. Tuttavia il soul bianco, come veniva chiamato negli anni sessanta e nei primi anni settanta, alludeva ai cantanti di razza bianca il cui stile veniva fortemente influenzato dal R&B dell'epoca. All'inizio si riferiva ad artisti come Eric Burdon, Dusty Springfield e Van Morrison, per evolvere in seguito verso The Box Tops, David Bowie e Joe Cocker. In alcuni casi, tra cui si distinsero The Flaming Ember e The Rascals, alla radio venivano presentati come artisti di colore (molte volte di proposito, per non perdere gli ascolti della comunità nera, che rifiutava spesso questo genere di artisti). È a George Woods, noto presentatore radiofonico della importante stazione radio WDAS di Philadelphia specializzata nel genere, che viene attribuita la coniazione del termine blue-eyed soul, con cui descriveva la musica del duo bianco Righteous Brothers, assai apprezzata nel palinsesto delle radio rhythm and blues e che, in queste stazioni radio, aprì la strada ad altri cantanti bianchi dotati di una analoga vena soul. In misura minore, questo termine si può applicare ad altri generi musicali derivati dal vero soul così come ad artisti che si rifanno al soul e le cui composizioni hanno molto in comune con questo genere, come Justin Timberlake, Kelly Clarkson, JoJo ed altri.
