- Blanco y Negro Records was established in 1983 by Geoff Travis of Rough Trade Records. Blanco y Negro was home to such artists as Bananarama, Everything But The Girl, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Dream Academy, Dinosaur Jr, Catatonia, The Veils and, reportedly, Elizabeth Fraser, former vocalist of the Cocteau Twins. It also signed folk super group Equation and Irish singer Cara Dillon also was signed to the label with partner Sam Lakeman.

Travis hatte 1978 die Firma Rough Trade Records gegründet und hat dort als A & R-Chef und Mastermind alle wichtigen Bands unter Vertrag genommen. Er sah jedoch die Grenzen eines Indie-Labels für den kommerziellen Erfolg einiger Bands und beschloss, mit Blanco y Negro ein "Indie-Label mit einem Major-Vertrieb", in diesem Fall Warner Records, zu gründen.
