The focal point of Blackheath is its centre which is known as the Village. The borough boundary runs across the middle of the heath; much of Blackheath Village on the south side of the Heath lies in Lewisham, while the Blackheath Standard area and that part of the Village around Blackheath Halls lie on the north and eastern side respectively, in Greenwich. Blackheath was the centre of the ancient Hundred of Blackheath. The Prime Meridian runs across the western side of Blackheath.

Romerne anla et lite samfunn på stedet, som ligger langs Watling Street. I middelalderen opplevde Blackheath å bli et samlingssted for både bondeopprøret i 1381 og Jack Cades opprør i Kent i 1450. Senere kom også flere opprørere dit; den 17. juni 1497 ble korniske opprørere slått i slaget ved Deptford Bridge, som også har blitt kalt slaget ved Blackheath. I det 17. århundre var området plaget av landeveisrøvere som stoppet trafikk på Watling Street. På slutten av det 18. århundre begynte byggingen av Blackheath Park på eiendommen kjent som Cator Estate. Det eksklusive boligområdet ble grunnlagt av John Cator, og ligger øst for Blackheath Village. Det er mange gode eksempler på georgiansk og viktoriansk arkitektur, samt noen senere bygninger. Eiendommen tilhørte tidligere sir John Morden, som også eide Morden College sørøst for sletten.
