- A black hat is the villain or bad guy, especially in a western movie in which such a character would wear a black hat in contrast to the hero's white hat. In Jewish circles, it refers to the ultra-orthodox who wear large-brimmed black hats. The phrase is often used figuratively, especially in computing slang, where it refers to a computer security hacker who breaks into networks or computers, or creates computer viruses. It may also refer to the act of spamming the internet with personal/social messages where the main intention of spamming is monetization or Black Hat SEO.

Questo termine è spesso utilizzato nel campo della sicurezza informatica e dai programmatori per indicare una persona dalle grandi capacità informatiche, ma con fini illeciti. Questo termine deriva dal sostantivo di significato opposto white hat hacker. Solitamente un black hat è una persona che mantiene segretamente una conoscenza su vulnerabilità ed exploit che trova a proprio vantaggio, non rivelandola al pubblico o al proprietario per correzioni.

Bardzo często towarzyszą im pomocnicy, czasem mało inteligentni, innym razem będący groźniejszymi przeciwnikami niż ich szefowie. W kilku filmach (np. w pierwszej i trzeciej części Indiany Jonesa i drugiej i trzeciej części Piratów z Karaibów) jest kilku czarnych charakterów, współpracujących ze sobą i równych sobie. Rzadko są dwa czarne charaktery nie współpracujące ze sobą. Czasem te same czarne charaktery i ci sami bohaterowie spotykają się częściej niż w jednym utworze. Noszą wtedy miano arcywroga (np. Batman – Joker, Superman – Lex Luthor).

Plus généralement, ils utilisent leur savoir pour découvrir des choses qui leur sont cachées. Leur nombre ne cesse de grandir étant donné la valeur de plus en plus grande des informations dans la guerre économique. Il n’est pas impossible que certains black hats finissent par changer de bord et se fassent employer par des sociétés spécialisées dans la sécurité informatique à l’instar de Sven Jaschan, auteur du virus Sasser, recruté en 2005, par la PME allemande Securepoint. La communauté des black hats est hétérogène : les différents membres ne se reconnaissent pas toujours entre eux, à cause de leurs différences d’opinion, de capacités ou de philosophie.
