At the 2007 SAP Open, Phau showed incredible sportsmanship while playing in the first round against Konstantinos Economidis. A ball that Phau hit to Economondis was out, but not called by the line judge. Economidis returned it, and Phau having seen that his ball was out, let the return go by, giving the point to Economidis. Phau went on to win the match and advance to the second round. In April 2009 at the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Houston, Texas at River Oaks Country Club, Phau was defeated by American Wayne Odesnik 4-6, 3-6 in the semi-finals. In August 2009, he lost to Andy Roddick in the the 1st round of the US Open.

Des Weiteren war er die Nummer drei des deutschen Mannschaftsmeisters TK Grün-Weiss Mannheim im Jahr 2005 und 2007.
