While biodiesel and bio-ethanol production so far only use parts of a plant, i.e. oil, sugar, starch or cellulose, BTL production uses the whole plant which is gasified by gasification. The result is that for BTL, less land area is required per unit of energy produced compared with biodiesel or bio-ethanol. Flash pyrolysis - producing bio-oil, char and gas at temperatures between 350-550°C and residence times < 1 second (also called anhydrous pyrolysis). Catalytic depolymerization - using heat and catalysts to separate usable diesel fuel from hydrocarbon wastes.

Diese Syntheseform basiert auf der Kohleverflüssigung, die auf Biomasse übertragen wird. Die BtL-Produktion ist eine noch sehr junge Technologie, einzelne Pilotprojekte arbeiten erfolgreich; die Firma Choren Industries hat ein erstes Werk in Freiberg (Sachsen) für ihre Produkte SunFuel und SunDiesel aufgebaut. Im Gegensatz zu Biodiesel und Bioethanol wird BtL-Kraftstoff aus Holz, Stroh bzw. Ganzpflanzen-Biomasse hergestellt. So kann insbesondere die gesamte geerntete Pflanze für die Kraftstoffproduktion verwendet werden - je nach Ausgangsprodukt kann entsprechend ein höherer Hektar-Ertrag für die genutzte Biomasse erzielt werden. Eine Abgrenzung erfolgt gegenüber Kraftstoffen, die auf einer Direktverflüssigung ohne die Herstellung von Synthesegas sowie gegenüber Kraftstoffen, die auf der Verzuckerung von Cellulose als zentralem Bestandteil des Holzes beruhen

Syntesgasen i sin tur är framställd ur biogas eller ur biomassa som till exempel ved, flis, pellets, bark. Ett exempel på kemisk process som ger BTL-dieselolja är Fischer-Tropsch-processen. BTL-dieselolja kan alltså vara ett slags FT-diesel. Om biogas används kan även begreppet Gas To Liquids användas. Området utvecklas för närvarande snabbt och man har redan funnit vägar att omvandla biogas till t. ex. etanol eller metanol via katalytiska processer. Genom att omvandla biogas till ett vätskeformigt bränsle skulle man kunna komma ifrån problemet att behöva lagra och distribuera gas ombord på fordon.
