- Bill "Goldie" Goldthorpe (b. June 20, 1953 in Hornepayne, Ontario) is a retired professional ice hockey left winger who played for 16 minor league teams between 1973 to 1984, playing exhibition games with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins. Goldthorpe grew up in Thunder Bay, Ontario, is widely regarded as one of the most infamous hockey enforcers to have ever played the game, a man once dubbed the "wildest, meanest, most unpredictable player in hockey", earning an amazing 1,132 penalty minutes in 194 professional games. He was the inspiration for the character Ogie Ogilthorpe in the 1977 film Slap Shot. On January 1, 2008 during the 1st intermission of the NHL's Winter Classic outdoor game in Buffalo, NBC showed a 1 minute and 15 second piece on the movie Slapshot and the Ogilthorpe, Bill Goldthorpe connection to Bob Costas. Costas once did radio play-by-play for the Syracuse Blazers (NAHL) in 1973-74, a team that Bill Goldthorpe played on. Goldthorpe is currently a foreman at a construction company in Canada, having held that position in San Diego for several years.

Sa carrière s'est presque toute déroulée dans les circuits professionnels mineurs: il n'a jamais joué dans la Ligue nationale de hockey et n'a joué qu'en de rares occasions dans l'autre circuit majeur de l'époque, l'Association mondiale de hockey. Il a inspiré le personnage du psychopathe du rink Ogie Ogilthorpe dans le film Slap Shot (doublé en français du Québec sous le nom de Lancer frappé et en France sous le nom de La Castagne), ce qui a suscité chez lui une immense fierté. Il est né à Hornepayne et a été formé au Canada par Albert Cava, une gloire locale. Lors de sa première saison chez les Blazers de Syracuse, il réussit 20 buts et 46 points, avant de partir pour les Fighting Saints du Minnesota. Célèbre pour ses cheveux blonds à la coupe afro, il joua 10 ans comme professionnel et changea 16 fois de club, signe d'une certaine instabilité. Ses prestations sur et hors de la patinoire lui valurent même une garde à vue pour une bagarre à l'aéroport de Green Bay. Il fut suspendu trois matches pour être aller casser la figure de Bob O'Reilly au banc de pénalité. Goldie a fait 18 séjours en prison ou garde à vue et a été deux fois hospitalisé dans un état critique. Goldthorpe est aujourd'hui contremaître dans la construction.
