- Beta Ceti (β Cet / β Ceti) is the brightest star in the constellation Cetus. Although it has the Bayer designation "beta", it is actually brighter than Alpha Ceti. It has the traditional names Deneb Kaitos or Diphda. Deneb Kaitos is easy to locate due to its location in an otherwise dark corner of the sky. Deneb Kaitos has a stellar classification on the border between G and K, making it a yellowish-orange star somewhat cooler than the Sun. In spite of its cooler nature, Deneb Kaitos is several times brighter than the Sun, as it is more massive and has several times the Sun's radius. Deneb Kaitos appears to be an older star leaving the main sequence on its way through the red giant phase of its evolution. With an apparent magnitude of 2.04 it ranks among the brighter stars in our night sky, and an absolute magnitude of −0.31. At only 96 light years from the Earth, Deneb Kaitos is one of the nearer stars of a bright apparent magnitude. It can be located at declination −17° 59' 11.81" and right ascension of 00:43:35.23 (2000). The traditional name Deneb Kaitos is Arabic for "tail of Cetus", also known as Diphda "frog", from the Arabic الضفدع الثاني aḍ-ḍafdaʿ aṯ-ṯānī "the second frog" ("the first frog" is Fomalhaut).

Le terme de Deneb est également employé dans de plusieurs autres noms traditionnels d'étoiles, comme α Cygni (Deneb), ι Ceti (Deneb Kaitos Shemali), β Leonis (Denebola) et de nombreux autres. Cette étoile est caractérisée par un type spectral entre G et K, ce qui en fait une étoile jaunâtre-orange légèrement plus froide que notre Soleil. Malgré sa froideur naturelle, Deneb Kaitos est plusieurs fois plus brillante que le Soleil, comme elle est plus massive et plusieurs fois plus grande que le rayon solaire. Deneb Kaitos apparait être une vieille étoile dans la séquence principale, et traverse actuellement sa phase de géante rouge.

Deneb Kaitos is een felle reus een hete corona met een massa van drie zonnemassa's welke ongeveer 20.000 keer meer röntgenstraling uitstraalt als de zon. Vermoedt wordt dat dit veroorzaakt wordt doordat de ster zich in een vergevorderd stadium van heliumverbranding zit. In dit stadium is de kern van de ster zeer heet (meer dan honderd miljoen graden Celsius) waarbij helium door middel van kernfusie in koolstof omgezet wordt. Met kennis over de sterevolutie is het mogelijk om een beeld te krijgen van de levensloop van Deneb Kaitos. De ster hield zich de eerste miljard jaar van zijn bestaan bezig met het verbranden van waterstof tot helium. Nadat het helium in de kern was uitgeput trok het midden van de ster samen totdat waterstofgas rond de heliumkern heet en dicht genoeg werd om hier kernfusiereacties te laten ontsteken. Deze krachtige nieuwe energiebron deed de buitenste delen van de ster sterk uitzetten en afkoelen. Gedurende deze periode werd Deneb Kaitos een rode reus. Na ongever 10 miljoen jaar trok de kern van de ster samen en warmde op tot zo'n 100 miljoen graden zodat heliumfusie plaats kon vinden. In dit stadium, dat 100 miljoen jaar of langer kan duren, is de diameter van de ster geslonken tot 20 keer die van onze zon en is de oppervlaktetemperatuur gestegen zodat het geen rode reus meer is.

Temperatura powierzchni tego pomarańczowego olbrzyma wynosi ok. 5400 K. Masa Deneb Kaitos jest 3 razy większa od masy Słońca, jej średnica wynosi ok. 24 mln km. Gwiazda ta świeci 145 razy mocniej niż nasza Gwiazda Dzienna, jeden obrót wokół własnej osi wykonuje w ciągu 170 dni.
