- Bernd Sturmfels is a Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He received his PhD in 1987 from the University of Washington and the Technische Universität Darmstadt. After two postdoctoral years at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation in Linz, Austria, he taught at Cornell University, before joining UC Berkeley in 1995. His honors include a National Young Investigator Fellowship, an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship, and a David and Lucile Packard Fellowship. Bernd Sturmfels has made contributions to a variety of areas of mathematics, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, Gröbner bases, T-theory, tropical geometry, algebraic statistics, and computational biology.
- Bernd Sturmfels est un mathématicien et informaticien théorique allemand né le 28 mars 1962 à Kassel, Allemagne. Sturmfels est actuellement professeur à l'Université de Californie à Berkeley. En 1987, Sturmfels obtient deux doctorats en mathématiques : l'un de l'université de Washington et l'autre de l'université technique de Darmstadt. Sturmfels est ensuite post-doctorant à l'Institute for Mathematics and its Applications de Minneapolis, Minnesota pendant une année puis enseignant au Research Institute for Symbolic Computation à l'université de Linz en Autriche. Il travaille ensuite à la Cornell University, avant de rejoindre le département de mathématiques de l'Université de Berkeley en 1995. Sturmfels s'intéresse au calcul formel en particulier pour la résolution de systèmes polynomiaux, ainsi qu'à la combinatoire, et à partir de 2001, il intègre, en plus du département de mathématiques, le département d'informatique de UC Berkeley. Sturmfels a été distingué par plusieurs bourses et prix prestigieux. Sturmfels est intervenu dans plusieurs domaines des mathématiques et de l'informatique théorique : géométrie algébrique, algèbre commutative et combinatoire, base de Gröbner pour la résolution des systèmes polynomiaux, théorie des invariants, géométrie synthétique, T-théorie, géométrie tropicale, statistique algébrique et statistique biologique.
