Es wurde im Rahmen der Errichtung des „Neuen Werks“ (1679−1682), mit dem St. Georg in die Stadtbefestigung einbezogen wurde, erbaut. Von hier aus führte die Chaussee nach Berlin. Die Bezeichnung Berliner Tor ist heute vor allem durch den gleichnamigen U- und S-Bahnhof bekannt.
