Benjamin Swift was a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator and lawyer from Vermont. Swift was born in Amenia, New York. He moved with his father to Bennington, Vermont at the age of 5. In 1809 he moved to St. Albans, Vermont and became an important lawyer, banker and farmer in that area. He immediately became active in politics, serving in the Vermont state assembly during 1813. He again served in the Vermont state assembly from 1825 to 1827.

While in Congress, Swift was a strong opponent of President Andrew Jackson and helped found the Whig Party.

Unmittelbar danach wurde er als Nationalrepublikaner ins Repräsentantenhaus der Vereinigten Staaten in Washington gewählt, wo er bis 1831 verblieb. Später schloss er sich den Whigs an und saß für diese vom 4. März 1833 bis zum 3. März 1839 im US-Senat. Im Kongress gehörte er zu den erklärten Gegnern der Politik von Präsident Andrew Jackson. Nachdem ihn seine Partei nicht für eine weitere Legislaturperiode nominiert hatte, zog sich Swift aus der Politik zurück. Er arbeitete wieder als Anwalt und Landwirt und starb 1847 in St. Albans.
