Beauty and the Beast is a 1946 French romantic fantasy film adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont's fairy tale. Directed by French poet/filmmaker Jean Cocteau, the film stars Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais as both Avenant and The Beast. The plot revolves around Belle's father who is sentenced to death for picking a rose from Beast's garden. Belle offers to go back to the Beast in her father's place.

Cocteau toont hier aan hoe moeilijk fantasie soms van realiteit te scheiden is. In de hoofdrollen zijn Josette Day als Belle, Michel Auclair als haar broer Ludovic en Jean Marais in drie rollen te zien, waaronder die van het beest en de prins. Verantwoordelijk voor de muziek was Georges Auric, en Henri Alekan voor de cinematografie. Christian Bérard en Lucien Carré deden de art direction. Philip Glass componeerde in 1995 een opera naar deze film. De oorspronkelijke versie werd uitgevoerd met musici en zangers op het toneel, terwijl een gerestaureerde, ondertitelde versie van de film op een doek achter hun werd getoond. Belle werd toen door de mezzosopraan Janice Felty gezongen.
