  • A Bearded Dragon is one of several species of agamid lizards in the genus Pogona found in zoos and private collections. Pogona describes seven species found across Australia, some of which are bred and sold as pets. These captive animals are also called Beardies by those who breed or raise them. Bearded Dragons are popular exotic pets, most commonly Pogona vitticeps, the Inland or Central Bearded Dragon. They are a popular species among children, because of their friendly and calm nature, along with the relative ease of caring for them. Most Bearded Dragons in captivity have broad triangular heads and flattened bodies, with adults reaching approximately 16 to 22 inches (410 to 560 mm) from head to tail and weighing 350 to 600 grams (10 to 20 oz). When threatened, a Bearded Dragon expands a spiny pouch under its lower jaw, and inhales air to puff up, which makes it seem larger. The pouch resembles a beard, lending the animal its name.
