- The Battle of Resaca was part of the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War. The battle was waged in both Gordon and Whitfield counties, Georgia, from May 13–May 15, 1864. It ended inconclusively. The battle was fought between the Military Division of the Mississippi on the side of the Union and the Army of Tennessee for the Confederates. There were 6,100 combined casualties: 3,500 for the Union and 2,600 for the Confederacy. Johnston had withdrawn his forces from Rocky Face Ridge to the hills around Resaca. On May 13, the Union troops tested the Rebel lines to pinpoint their whereabouts. The next day full scale fighting occurred, and the Union troops were generally repulsed except on the Rebel right flank where Sherman did not fully exploit his advantage. On May 15, the battle continued with no advantage to either side until Sherman sent a force across the Oostanaula River, at Lay’s Ferry, using newly delivered Cumberland pontoon bridges and advanced towards Johnston’s railroad supply line. Unable to halt this Union turning movement, Johnston was forced to retire, and leading to the Battle of Adairsville on May 17.

Elle a fini de manière incertaine en ne délivrant pas de vainqueur final de manière incontestable. La bataille a opposé la Division militaire du Mississippi (mené par William T. Sherman) du côté de l'union et l'armée du Tennessee (Joseph E. Johnston) pour les confédérés. Il y a eu 5.547 pertes humaines : 2.747 pour l'Union et 2.800 pour la confédération. Johnston s'était retiré de Rocky Face Ridge pour aller sur les collines autour de Resaca. Le 13 mai 1864, les troupes de l'union ont surveillé les lignes rebelles pour déterminer exactement leur position. Fort de ses renseignements le combat s'est déroulé tout le lendemain, et les troupes de l'Union ont été généralement repoussés excepté sur le flanc droit rebelle où Sherman qui avait réalisé une perçée n'a pas entièrement exploité son avantage. Le 15 mai 1864, la bataille a continué sans donner un avantage à l'un ou l'autre des belligérants jusqu'à ce que Sherman ait envoyé une force à travers le fleuve d'Oostanula, au lieu dit Lay’s Ferry, afin de bloquer la voie ferrée permettant à Johnston, l'arrivée de vivres et de renforts. Incapable de stopper ce mouvement des forces militaires de l'Union, les forces confédérées de Johnston ont été contraintes à un repli stratégique.

Johnston, zauważywszy manewr Shermana, który opuścił pozycje u stóp Rocky Face Ridge, obsadził wzgórza wokół miejscowości Resaca. Wojska Shermana przekroczyły rzekę Etowah przy pomocy właśnie dostarczonych armii mostów pontonowych typu "Cumberland" i skierowały się ku pozycjom Johnstona. 13 maja siły unionistów jedynie próbowały siłę oporu przeciwnika w wybranych miejscach. Następnego dnia doszło do walk na całej linii i niemal wszędzie siły unionistów zostały odparte za wyjątkiem prawego skrzydła konfederatów, gdzie jednak Sherman nie potrafił wykorzystać swojej przewagi. 15 maja bitwa trwała, przy czym żadna ze stron nie potrafiła osiągnąć przewagi, dopóki Sherman nie posłał części sił na drugi brzeg rzeki Oostanaula w miejscu znanym jako Lay’s Ferry, by zaatakować linie zaopatrzenia przeciwnika. Nie posiadając wystarczających sił, by powstrzymać ten atak unionistów, Johnston został zmuszony do wycofania się.
