The Battle of Polygon Wood was a successful attack in the Battle of Passchendaele. Using General Herbert Plumer's "bite and hold" tactic (where the objective was limited to what could be captured and successfully held), the battle was part of a larger offensive in the area by the British Expeditionary Force. Polygon Wood was only stumps and broken trees by the time the battle took place, having been reduced by artillery previously.

  • The Battle of Polygon Wood was a successful attack in the Battle of Passchendaele. The main landmark became what was called the Butte which was an old Belgian rifle range backstop, being clearly visible in the now deforested wood. At 5:50am just as the Butte became visible, the Australian 4th Division attacked on the left while the 5th Division took the right. Both divisions advanced under what was later described as the "most perfect barrage that had ever protected Australian troops."
