The Battle of Poelcappelle marked the end of successful British attacks during the Battle of Passchendaele. Pitting the attacking forces against German defenses virtually undamaged by artillery and protected by a moat of quicksand-like mud, the main attack was a failure and only the diversionary attack managed to gain any ground. Unfortunately, the lack of success of the main attack was not transmitted back to the Army Commanders, resulting in the next attack being poorly planned.
