- The Battle of Malaya was a campaign fought by Allied and Japanese forces in Malaya, from December 8 1941 to January 31 1942 during the Second World War. The campaign was dominated by land battles between British Commonwealth army units, and the Imperial Japanese Army. For the British, Indian, Australian and Malayan forces defending the colony, the campaign was a disaster. The battle is notable for the Japanese use of bicycle infantry, which allowed troops to carry more equipment and swiftly move through thick jungle terrain. Also worth noting is the fact that while they had fewer troops than their counterparts, they had tanks, a clear demonstration of the difference in power of the two sides. Royal Engineers, equipped with demolition charges, destroyed over a hundred bridges during the retreat. This did little to delay the Japanese, who built temporary wooden bridges over rivers to cross when necessary. By the time the Japanese had captured Singapore, they had suffered 9,600 casualties.
