The road and railway routes through Keren were the key to access the city of Asmara (colonial capital of Eritrea) and the Red Sea port of Massawa.

Après cette bataille, la conquête de l'Érythrée et de l'Éthiopie ne pose pas de difficultés particulières aux troupes alliées. Asmara tombe le 1 avril, Addis Abeba le 6 et Massaoua le 8. La campagne d'Afrique de l'Est se termine avec la prise de Gondar le 27 novembre.
