Motivada por las aspiraciones territoriales del rey castellano Sancho II que deseaba hacerse con el Reino de León que, tras la muerte de su padre Fernando I, había correspondido a su hermano Alfonso VI. Las tropas de Sancho, comandadas por El Cid, vencieron a las de Alfonso que fue hecho prisionero por su hermano y encarcelado en Toledo, por lo que el rey castellano pudo volver a unificar los reinos que había poseído su padre. nota adjunta: tras últimos estudios de la universidad de navarra, la batalla tuvo lugar en la localidad de villarmentero de campos, situado a 10 km de carrion de los condes, todavía allí hoy existen los pagos denominados "golpejera", "la matanza", o "las tiendas".
