The Basque-Icelandic pidgin was a pidgin spoken in Iceland in the 17th century. It developed due to the contact that Basque traders had with the Icelandic locals, probably in Vestfirðir. The vocabulary was heavily based upon the Labourdin Basque language, but also in an Atlantic pidgin with Romance and English influences.

  • The Basque-Icelandic pidgin was a pidgin spoken in Iceland in the 17th century. It developed due to the contact that Basque traders had with the Icelandic locals, probably in Vestfirðir. The vocabulary was heavily based upon the Labourdin Basque language, but also in an Atlantic pidgin with Romance and English influences. It is documented in two glossaries found around 1905 by Jón Helgason in the Arnamagnæan Collection of the University of Copenhagen: Vocabula gallica ("French words") and Vocabula biſcaïca. Helgason brought them to the attention of Christianus Cornelius Uhlenbeck, a versatile linguist from the University of Leyden with an expertise in Basque. His post-graduate student, N.G.H. Deen, traveled in 1927 to the Basque Country to collaborate with Julio de Urquijo on the research that Deen published as his doctorate thesis in 1937. The manuscripts were sent back to Iceland in 1986, but one of them was lost. Another Basque pidgin arose from contact between Basque whalers and Aboriginal inhabitants in the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Strait of Belle Isle.

Det användes sannolikt i kontakter mellan baskiska sjömän och den isländska lokalbefolkningen i Västfjordarna på nordvästra Island. I dokumentet AM 987 4:to, som finns bevarat hos Árni Magnússon-institutet för isländska studier i Reykjavik, finns två baskisk-isländska ordlistor vid namn Vocabula Gallica ("franska ord") och Vocabula Biscaica. Mot slutet av Vocabula Biscaica, som sammanlagt innehåller 278 ord, meningar och räkneord, finns ett antal fraser där den baskiska meningen är uppblandad med inslag från engelska (exempelvis for mi) eller franska och spanska (exempelvis mala eller presenta). Det baskisk-isländska pidginspråket är alltså inte en blandning mellan baskiska och isländska, utan en blandning av baskiska och ett antal andra språk. Sitt namn har det fått eftersom det uppstod på Island.
