- El basquetbol, popularment conegut com a bàsquet, és un esport practicat entre dos equips de cinc jugadors en joc cadascun, que cerquen d'introduir una pilota dins de la cistella defensada per l'equip contrari, amb l'objectiu d'aconseguir més punts que l'adversari, tot respectant les regles del joc. El bàsquet va néixer a Estats Units l'any 1891, inventat per James Naismith, professor d'educació física de la YMCA Training School d'Springfield a qui es va encarregar la invenció d'un esport que és jugués a una pista coberta, ja que els hiverns a aquella zona dificultaven qualsevol activitat a l'exterior. No obstant això, alguns historiadors atribueixen a la tribu maia l'origen del bàsquet ja que practicaven un esport similar, el tlachtli. Durant el segle XX el bàsquet es va difondre per tot el món gràcies a la creació de la Federació Internacional de Bàsquet el 1932, i és esport olímpic des dels Jocs Olímpics d'estiu de 1936, celebrats a Berlín. Fou durant la Primera Guerra Mundial, amb l'arribada de soldats americans que practicaven l'esport quan el bàsquet començà a popularitzar-se a Europa. El basquetbol es practicà per primer cop a Catalunya el 1913 a l'escola Vallparadís de Terrassa, fomentat per Alexandre Galí i Artur Martorell. Després de la Primera Guerra Mundial el belga Emile Tiberghien incorpora el basquetbol al seu gimnàs del carrer Aragó de Barcelona. Malgrat aquestes primeres manifestacions basquetbolistes a casa nostra, s'accepta comunament que el basquetbol fou introduït a Catalunya el 1922 pel pare Eusebi Millan en formar els primers equips infantils al col·legi de les Escoles Pies de Sant Anton de Barcelona.

Hru vytvořil v roce 1891 Dr. James Naismith pro zpestření zimní sportovní přípravy svých studentů. I přes to, že se v původní podobě jednalo o nepříliš dynamický sport (pravidla neumožňovala pohyb s míčem), získal si brzy značnou popularitu a rychle se rozšířil nejen po Spojených státech. V roce 1932 byla založena Mezinárodní basketbalová federace (International Basketball Federation). V roce 1936 byl basketbal zařazen na pořad olympijských her a od roku 1976 se koná i ženský basketbalový turnaj.

Suomessa koripallon pääsarjan nimi on nykyään Korisliiga. Kaudella 2004–2005 käytettiin nimeä Sparliiga. Suomessa on pääsarjatason lisäksi miehille kuusi alempaa divisioonatasoa miehillä ja naisille neljä. Suomen Koripalloliiton jäsenenä on noin 250 koripalloseuraa.
