C'est le plus ancien des ordres religieux, qui a tiré son nom de saint Basile de Césarée, qui l'institua vers l'an 357, en fondant un monastère dans une solitude du Pont, sur les bords de l'Iris, et qui lui donna une règle. Barlaam et Jean Bessarion appartenaient à cet ordre. Le pape Grégoire XIII le réforma en 1579. L'Église catholique compte cinq ordres ou congrégations qui suivent la règle de Saint Basile : La congrégation italo-grecque de Grottaferrata, fondée en 1579; La congrégation ruthène de Saint Josaphat, constituée en 1617 de plusieurs monastères regroupés par Saint Josaphat Kuncewicz, métropolite de Kiev; La congrégation Melkite du Saint-Sauveur, ou Melkites Salvatoriens, fondée au Liban en 1687; La congrégation Melkite de Saint Jean-Baptiste, ou Chouérites, fondée au Liban en 1697 : La congrégation Melkite d'Alep, séparée de la précédente en 1829.
