Bartolomeo Passerotti (1529 – 1592) was an Italian painter of the mannerist period, who worked mainly in his native Bologna. His family name is also spelled Passerotti or Passarotto. He traveled to Rome in the mid-16th century, where he worked under Girolamo Vignola and Taddeo Zuccari. Upon returning to Bologna, he accumulated a large studio, and influenced many Bolognese who would later play a role in the rise of the Baroque. Annibale Carracci (whose brother Agostino studied with Passerotti) was influenced by Passerotti's genre scenes in a select set of paintings (such as The Beaneater and The Butcher's Shop, the latter being originally attributed to Passerotti).   • Tra il 1550 e il 1555 l'artista fu a Roma al seguito del Vignola e poi presso Taddeo Zuccari (1555-57 o 1560). Nel 1560 si stabilì a Bologna mantenendosi in contatto con l'ambiente romano. Nel 1564-65 eseguì la pala raffigurante la Madonna e santi per la chiesa bolognese di San Giacomo Maggiore. In questa, come nella prime opere si orientò verso la tradizione pittorica emiliana di Correggio, Parmigianino e Nicolò dell'Abate, unitamente ai modi di Pellegrino Tibaldi e a suggestioni fiamminghe. Nelle opere successive l'artista si indirizzò verso i modelli tosco-romani di Giorgio Vasari e di Prospero Fontana (Adorazione dei Magi: Bologna, Palazzo Arcivescovile; Madonna in gloria con i santi Petronio e Pietro martire, 1570 circa: Bologna, basilica di San Petronio).
