Smith was made club captain in 1997, the same year they achieved promotion to the Premier Division. After playing with the Dens Park side for ten-and-a-half seasons, where he made 359 appearances, Smith reached his testimonial year. As is the custom there were various golf outings and dinners to mark this achievement. In 2006 Smith also took on the role of joint caretaker manager for the final two games of that season. Smith then transferred to Icelandic outfit Valur who finished third in 2006 and won the Icelandic Premier Division in 2007, their first championship in 20 years. During his career he has played in the right back, centre back, and defence midfield roles. Smith joined Partick Thistle on loan in January 2007, making 18 appearances and scoring one goal before returning for Valur's new season and, again, returned to Scotland when he signed, on loan, for Greenock Morton in January 2008. On 4 November 2008 he returned to Dundee as under-19s coach, with his registration as a player following in January. On 26 January 2009, Smith was loaned out to neighbours Brechin City, with the ability to be recalled at any time. As Brechin are part-time, Smith will continue in his role as under-19s coach at Dens Park. On 3 April 2009, Smith was inducted into Dundee's Hall of Fame.
