- Adler Berriman Seal, or "Barry Seal" (July 16, 1939–February 19, 1986) Using a concealed camera installed by the CIA, Seal took pictures during the Nicaragua sting operation that clearly showed Pablo Escobar and other members the Colombian Cartel loading bales of cocaine on to a C-123 transport plane. In order to gain Congressional support for Contra rebels, President Reagan displayed one of the photographs on national television. He suggested that a top ranking Sandinista official was involved in drug smuggling. DEA officials in Washington denied the claim a few days later, pointing out that the Nicaraguan was a local fixer. Regardless, the publicity accorded the sting, combined with Seal's assassination, led to years of speculation that the smuggler had close ties to the CIA. Except for this one operation, Seal had no ties to the intelligence agency. He did however serve as a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) informant. After a 1984 arrest in Fort Lauderdale, Florida for money laundering and Quaalude smuggling, Seal negotiated a plea bargain that included him becoming an informant for the DEA and testifying against his former Colombian employers, putting several of them in jail. He was murdered on February 19, 1986 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. After a brief stint with U.S. Special Forces in Vietnam, Seal went to work for TWA as a flight engineer and later became the youngest 747 pilot in the nation at age twenty six. He flew transcontinental flights for TWA until he was fired after he agreed to fly plastic explosives from Miami to Mexico for an Anti-Castro group. But the buyer turned out to be a Federal Agent and he was arrested. He lost his job with TWA and became a private aviation consultant for groups in Latin America, which led to a career in transporting drugs from Latin America. Through some contacts he was introduced to marijuana growers in Colombia. After he made some trips he decided this would be his new career venture. In 1981 he began working for the Ochoa family and the Medellin Cartel transporting more lucrative cocaine shipments.

Er gilt als einer der größten und erfolgreichsten Drogenschmuggler in der Geschichte, der Straßenverkaufswert der von ihm importierten Drogen wird offiziell auf drei bis fünf Milliarden US-Dollar geschätzt. Nach Aufdeckung seiner Geschäfte 1984 wurde er Kronzeuge der amerikanischen Anti-Drogenbehörde DEA. Im Februar 1986 wurde er von einem Team von sieben kolumbianischen Auftragsmördern in Baton Rouge, Louisiana auf offener Straße erschossen. Kurz darauf hätte er vor einer Grand Jury des US-Bundesstaats Arkansas darüber aussagen sollen, wie seine Schmuggeltätigkeit mit verdeckten Operationen der CIA zusammenhing. Seal war die Schlüsselfigur des sogenannten Mena-Skandals (siehe Weblinks). Seal arbeitete mit Eugene Hasenfus zusammen, der am 5. Oktober 1986 über Nicaragua in einem Frachtflugzeug vom Typ Fairchild C-123 abgeschossen wurde. Die Maschine gehörte bis zu seinem Tod Barry Seal. Der Zwischenfall hatte maßgeblichen Anteil an der Aufdeckung der Iran-Contra-Affäre.

Luego de ser arrestado en 1984 en Fort Lauderdale, Florida por lavado de dinero y contrabando de Quaalude, Seal negoció un acuerdo con la justicia que incluyó su conversión a informante de la DEA y testificar en contra de sus anteriores empleadores colombianos, ayudando a enviar a varios de ellos a la carcel. En lo más álgido del escándalo `Irán-Contras`, Seal hizo revelaciones sobre la presunta participación de la CIA en el financiamiento a la `contra` con recursos del narcotráfico. Luego fue asesinado el 19 de febrero de 1986 en Baton Rouge, Luisiana. Todo el tiempo que Seal estuvo envuelto en el tráfico de drogas, trabajó también como piloto de aerolinea comercial. Voló en vuelos intercontinentales para TWA hasta que fue despedido luego de su arresto en 1984.
