Eerder in zijn carrière zong hij bij de New Christy Minstrels, een christelijke folkband, waarin ook Kenny Rogers en Kim Carnes hun eerste schreden naar nationale roem deden. Vanaf 1971 produceerde hij uitsluitend christelijke muziek. Hij verhuisde naar Nieuw-Zeeland maar kwam weer terug en woont nu in Californië.
