Corbin ist der Sohn von Kilmer Blaine Corbin, einem Richter und Senator des US-States Texas (1948-1956), und Alma Scott Corbin, einer Lehrerin. In Deutschland wurde Corbin besonders durch seine Rollen in den Spielfilmen WarGames, Ghost Dad – Nachrichten von Dad und in Urban Cowboy neben John Travolta bekannt. Er spielte außerdem die Figur des General Carville im Computerspiel C&C: Alarmstufe Rot 1 und 2. In der Fernsehserie One Tree Hill ist er in der Rolle des Coach Whitey Durham zusehen.

I più giovani però conoscono Barry come coach di una squadra liceale di basket, i Ravens, team di cui fanno parte Lucas e Nathan Scott, protagonisti della serie televisiva One Tree Hill. Barry ha preso parte soprattutto a film western ma la sua abilità nel cavalcare non deriva dalla recitazione. Molto del suo tempo lo passa infatti cavalcando nel suo piccolo ranch in Texas e da molti anni impiega il suo tempo in rodei di beneficenza.
