Han bodde på stedets kloster, Barking Abbey, mens han ventet på at Tower of London skulle bli ferdig. Barking Abbey ble grunnlagt i 666 av Erkenwald, som senere ble biskop av London. Det ble ødelagt av danene omkring 870, og gjenoppbygget omkring et århundre senere av kong Edgar. St. Margarets kirke er fra normannisk tid. Kaptein James Cook giftet seg med Elizabeth Batt i denne kirken. Byen oppsto som en fiskerlandsby. Det er usikkert når dette skjedde, men det var senest i tudortiden. Fengselsreformatoren Elizabeth Fry er gravlagt på kvekernes kirkegård i Barking.
