  • BankTrack is a global network of non-governmental organizations cooperating on the field of banks and sustainability. The main goal of the network is to change the private financial sector in such a way that they can be accountable for their work. Often there is a gap between policy and practice at a bank, therefore BankTrack campaigns at certain Dodgy Deals: projects that banks are involved in that harm people and planet. The network exists out of thirty organizations, amongst whom Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth. The network was formally established in 2005, but in 2003 the beginning of BankTrack was marked by drawing the Collevechio declaration. In this declaration, the members of then declared they would urge private banks to invest in a sustainable way. In 2007 the first version of the Mind the Gap report was released. In this report, the credit policies of 45 private banks have been reviewed and scored. The contents of this report are slightly similar to the contents of the Eerlijke Bankwijzer, a Dutch site at which one can check how sustainable his or her bank is. In June 2003 the Equator Principles have been signed: voluntary principles that banks can enhace when financing projects. At the moment there are already over 70 signatories and the number of banks that have signed the Equator Principles is growing steadily. BankTrack has been involved in the development of the the Equator Principles from the start. By the end of 2009, the Performance Standards of the IFC will be reviewed. Since the Equator Principles are following these standards, they will be reviewed as well. BankTrack is following these developments in close cooperation with its members.
