- Das Babydoll ist eine Pyjamaform, die 1956 in Mode kam. Sie wurde nach der gleichnamigen Hauptfigur des US-amerikanischen Spielfilms Baby Doll – Begehre nicht des anderen Weib (1956) des Regisseurs Elia Kazan benannt. Für das Kleidungsstück hat sich die gebundene Schreibweise eingebürgert. Als Babydoll bezeichnete man damals einen sehr leichten Pyjama für Frauen. Er bestand aus einem kurzen Pumphöschen und einem weiten, losen und leicht A-förmig geschnittenen Oberteil, an dem kurze Puffärmel angesetzt waren. Heute bezeichnet man mit Babydoll nur noch das luftige Oberteil. Dessen Form ist im Wesentlichen unverändert geblieben. So besteht es oben herum aus leicht abgesetzten Körbchen, während der untere Teil wie ein Rock geschnittenen ist. Babydolls are now available in a sufficiently wide variety of styles that many lingerie retailers consider babydolls a distinct department. Modern babydolls often vary considerably from the styles of the 1960s and 1970s. Babydoll negligees from the 1950s to the early 1980s are now collectible vintage items. Some babydolls open in front and resemble a robe or peignoir.
