  • The BMW E34 is the version of the BMW 5 Series automobile built from mid-1987 to 1996, with the Touring model ending June 1996. BMW's traditional FR layout and straight-6 were used, providing the smooth engine and optimal weight distribution BMW customers had come to expect. The E34 also had a much stiffer body and was more streamlined than its predecessor, looking very much like the BMW E32 7-series. The E34 was among the most reliable luxury cars on the market, earning the best-in-class reliability rating from Intellichoice in 1991. It is still considered one of the most reliable BMWs made. It was also one of the safest cars on the road during its production, providing airbags, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, and a very rigid body structure to protect occupants in the event of an accident. The E34's 60-0 mph (97 to 0 km/h) stopping distance of 130 feet (40 m) was the best of any production sedan in 1990. It was also equipped with dynamic stability control (DSC) or skid control in later years on higher-specification variants. A few enhancements to the body's cosmetics and functionality, as well as a slew of engine and transmission evolutions, have appeared throughout its years of production. Among those, BMW's VANOS variable valve timing technology made its first appearance in the M50 2.5L engines built in September 1992 and later.

Wiele z silników E34 zostało nagrodzone w prestiżowym konkursie (EOTY). Ciekawostką było wyprodukowanie wersji 518g - fabrycznie zasilanej instalacją gazową. Skrzynie były manualne i automatyczne (produkowane przez firmę ZF). Manualne posiadały 5 przełożeń, jedynie wersja 540 (bardzo rzadko spotykana) - 6 biegów. Automaty: 4 biegowe (4HPxx) oraz 5 biegowe (5HPxx) W 1991r. wprowadzono wersję iX - z napędem na 4 koła. Dostępne były 2 nadwozia sedan i kombi. Do napędu posłużył silnik M50B25 2,5 192KM. Była możliwość wyboru między skrzynią automatyczną i manualną. W 1991 roku wszystkie E34 otrzymały wewnętrzne chłodzenie powietrzne tylnych tarcz hamulcowych. We wrześniu 1991 roku rozpoczęto produkcję wersji nadwoziowej kombi touring z unikalnym wtedy podwójnym szyberdachem. Od 1988 w sprzedaży była także wersja M5. BMW E34 przeszło dwa faceliftingi. Pierwszy we wrześniu 1992 roku – zmieniono lusterka. Standardowo dla wszystkich modeli wprowadzono poduszkę powietrzną kierowcy, ABS. W silnikach M50 zastosowano system zmiennych faz rozrządu VANOS. Skrzynie automatyczne 4 biegowe, zastąpiono 5 biegowymi. Drugi w połowie 1994 roku - zmieniono przednią atrapę (grill) – na tzw. szeroki. Dodano drugi air-bag standardowo dla wszystkich wersji. E34 odznacza się wysoką niezawodnością.
